Why it’s worth buying

It’s small and takes up little room

The West Bend 86628 Automatic Egg Cooker has a white base and a clear domed top. The size of the egg cooker is around 8 inches in diameter and 7 inches high so takes up very little space on the worktop or in the cupboard. It comes with an egg tray that holds 7 eggs and a poaching tray with 4 spaces for poaching. There is also a measuring cup with piercer and all these parts can be stored inside the egg cooker on the counter so you don’t have to look for any parts before using. When something is easy to use and all you have to do is add water and eggs to get going then you will find you will use it a lot.

Easy to boil eggs

If you want a boiled egg for your breakfast you need to fill a pan with water, set it to boil, add your eggs, set the timer, then cool down before peeling if it’s hard boiled eggs or set in an egg cup for a soft boiled egg. Not difficult I know, but you have to constantly check at each point till your eggs are done. With an egg cooker boiling eggs becomes a much simpler operation. For all of you who are not sure how to use an electric egg cooker, no separate pans are required and no boiling a lot of water because the process of an egg cooker is to steam your eggs with a small amount of water in the base. It doesn’t matter how many eggs you want to cook at one time whether you want to cook the full amount of 7 eggs or just making a single egg the process is the same, the only difference is in the amount of water that is required.

The egg cooker comes with a water measurement cup with levels on the side for the type of boiled egg you want and the number of eggs you want to cook. So if you want to have 7 hard boiled eggs, fill the egg cooker measuring cup to the right level and add into the base of the egg cooker, add the egg boiling tray on top and then prepare your eggs. The water measurement cup has an egg piercer in the base of it which you use to pierce the eggs at the wide end. Eggs naturally have air inside of them so piercing them stops them cracking when they are being cooked. Place your eggs on the tray and add the domed lid. Switch on. You don’t need to check or do anything until the buzzer goes off to let you know they are done. You still need to cool your eggs before peeling but you will find the peeling much easier. The whole process is easy, quick and with very little clean up required.

Poacher tray

If you’re not that in love with boiled eggs and prefer to have your eggs poached then you have a poaching tray included in with the egg cooker that you can use to make poached eggs or even small mini omelettes. Similar process with poaching the eggs as with boiling them. If you spray the tray with non stick spray it makes it easier to remove the eggs and you just need to use the water level suggested in the instruction manual. You have 4 spaces so you can poach up to 4 eggs at a time and it’s as simple as adding your eggs to the poaching tray, sit the tray on top of the egg holder and add the lid. Switch on. You might have to adjust the water level if the eggs aren’t quite to your liking but you should find the right level after a couple of attempts.

If you want to try mini omelettes just beat your eggs up beforehand add a little to the poaching tray then add whatever cooked ingredients you want, top up with the beaten egg and cook as if it was a poached egg. The great thing about mini omelettes is that you can take them in a packed lunch or keep them in the fridge for snacks.

Easy to clean

No pans to wash, just wipe out the base unit when it has cooled down. It’s stainless steel and easy to clean, if you get mineral deposits stuck on it just use a non scratch scrubber and that should lift it. The lid and the egg trays just wash out in warm soapy water. They are not suitable for dishwashing. You can get some egg sticking on the poaching tray if you don’t use a non stick spray but to be honest its fairly easy to clean out as it is just a plastic tray a dish cloth or scrubby can get it out easily.

This West Bend Egg Cooker is a very useful piece of kitchen equipment, it’s not very expensive to buy but you will find that you can use this cooker on a daily basis especially as it is more hands-free than boiling eggs with a pan and if you like poached eggs but have found them hard to make you might find making them the best reason to invest in an egg cooker. It can make a great gift especially for people without many kitchen facilities as it only needs an electric outlet and some water to work. Read our full review here
